Research week's

Today was the second day of the research, still trying to find suitable websites that i think can be reliable. And now going to look for some books that have been published by the artists.

I am now only going to enter the blog once a week until the research weeks are over because there really is not the much to say. However i will be entering my notes to my small book (like a diary.

First start

Hi, my name is Harrison Bates.
I am starting a new photography project, which will be looking at the environment that captive animals live in, i.e zoo's.

My ambitions are to get on to the wildlife and natural history photography course at falmouth university. I will be going down to Falmouth on April the 15th for an interview.

Statement of intent

This is a copy of the brief I have written my self and the work that follows will be the product of this.

Statement of Intent

Section 1-
Over the course I have learned some very important skills, for instance I now know how the different aspects of a camera works and how the aperture, shutter speed and exposure affects the photo. Furthermore I have learned how to use the darkroom chemicals and the processes to create large prints from a strip of negative film. I have also improved my drawing skills, when I first joined this course I could not draw to save my life, but now after practice I can draw with some skill as little as it may be; have found that I used to struggle with hands and I would draw them as squares but now I can start to draw the hands with a lot more detail and confidence.

Section 2 –
I have chosen creative media because I have always been interested in media – at A levels I wanted to try something new therefore I chose photography and loved every minute of it. So when I started on this course I knew that I wanted to try even more new things in photography, including darkroom techniques, film and sound. After this course I would love to go to Falmouth University to study marine and natural history photography. From there I hope to be a professional wild life photographer and travel the world for my job.

Section 3 –
I have a strong view on animals in a zoo because I do not think that it is right to keep wild animals in a tiny cage just for our own amusement. I think that it is wrong because in the wild they could walk for miles and explore but now they can only go to a restricted area; I feel that it isn’t a way to save endangered animals because they are not being released; it is a business and a large way to make money.
Therefore I will explore the ethical and moral rights of animals in the zoos. I am also going to look at other photographers, Garry Winogrand, Britta Jaschinski, Thomas Struth and from them explore my own technique to create strong effective photos. Which will hopefully create an impact on its audience. I will explore a number of different photography techniques; digital photography, darkroom procedures, different shutter speeds and depth of field ect.
At the end of this project I going to create a series of large-scale photographs and a small photography book exploring the impact of the man made environment on captive animals. I will also create a workbook showing the research, development and on going evaluation through out the project. I will show some of my best photos shown in a small book summarising my work.

Section 4 –
When I am doing my project I am going to keep a record of all my work that I have done on a daily basis, which will be in a form a form of diary, also I will create a blog for the reason that other people can give me feed back. I am also going to regularly talk with my tutor to see if I am still on target. This will also give me a chance to bounce off ideas and to reflect on the work I have already done. Finally when I then finished this project I will write an evaluative document on the work that I have done, including what went right and wrong which can help me in later life to see clearly how I did all together.
